The brainchild of veteran writer-directors Danny Arnold and Theodore J. Flicker, the comedy/drama Barney Miller (1975-1982) offered a very human look at the inner workings of a New York City police precinct; its wry and observant scripts, aided by a stellar cast, helped earn the series three Emmy Awards and a devoted fan base, which should be pleased by this two-disc set that compiles its entire first season. Viewers familiar with the series' later seasons will notice substantial differences in the cast and storyline; episodes divide Barney's (Hal Linden) time evenly between the 12th Precinct and his apartment, which he shares with wife Barbara Barrie and two children (all of whom would be phased out of the series). The first season squad was composed of Abe Vigoda's dyspeptic Fish, the overeager Wojciehowicz (Max Gail), dry-witted Yemana (Jack Soo, who passed away during the fifth season), and street-smart Chano (Gregory Sierra, who departed the series after the second season); Ron Glass's dapper Harris would not be listed in the opening credits until subsequent seasons.

Arnold, along with Chris Hayward (Get Smart) and other scribes, would pen the majority of the first season, which set the tone for the series by pitting the squad against a host of offbeat criminals, other cops, and regular citizens, several of whom would become semi-regulars; James Gregory's crusty Inspector Luger makes his debut in "Vigilante" (episode 9), while unscrupulous lawyer Arnold Ripner (Alex Henteloff) and Detective Wentworth (a pre-Alice Linda Lavin) have their first appearances in "The Experience" (episode 2) and "Ms. Cop" (episode 8), respectively.

Columbia/TriStar's two-disc set offers all 13 episodes of the first season, as well as short credit lists for some of the major players; the little-seen 1974 pilot, "The Life and Times of Captain Barney Miller," might have made an interesting supplemental feature, but fans should be pleased to have this set regardless. --Paul Gaita

Barney Miller was one of the funniest and most intelligent shows to ever grace the TV airwaves. Indirectly it paved the way for a number of other shows like Law and Order and NYPD Blue. I have heard police officers say that it in many ways is the most accurate cop shows on TV.

The show is great to watch because as has been said many times it had both great writing and amazing acting. The humor is dry and sensible and requires you to pay attention to understand what is going on. The warts and all portrayal of the 12th precinct is amazing with all its filth and broken down equipment. It is even funnier now to see how some of the clothing and dialogue has not stood up to the test of time. Lastly, I think that dropping Barney's family from the show was a very good idea as the focus was and should have been in the squad room.

A great DVD and lots of fun to watch. Any fan of the show will appreciate and enjoy it!

When Samurai Jack burst onto the small screen in 2001, it introduced a boldly imaginative visual style to the often dreary realm of television animation. Other series have tried to imitate the flattened, angular graphics pioneered by the UPA studio during early '50s. Samurai Jack succeeds in recapturing the essence of the UPA shorts because creator Genndy Tartakovsky and his artists understand that these highly stylized visuals require equally stylized movements.

The ongoing battle between heroic Jack and the evil shape-shifter Aku simultaneously evokes and spoofs the conventions of anime and Western live-action film. Long ago, Jack nearly destroyed Aku in a duel; in desperation, the wizard hurled the samurai far into the future, where Aku's word is law. Jack fights robots, monsters, bounty hunters, etc. as he seeks to return to his own time, so he can prevent Aku's rise to supremacy.

The writing is sometimes uneven, but even when the material feels weak, the visual imagination never falters, from the flamboyant character designs to the use of split-screen. The filmmakers stage the quiet moments as skillfully as the action sequences, and Samurai Jack offers more exciting storytelling than many big-budget animated features. There's plenty of sustained effort from the rest of the cast (Marilu Henner, Danny DeVito, Maureen Stapleton), with Griffin Dunne getting special points. This movie is so dumb, yet so amusing. It's a fun little movie with silly gag after silly gag. Maureen Stapleton as Ma Kelly is a riot. "Bless the saints, it's an ashtray! I've been thinking of taking up smoking. This clinches it!"

If you like silly-laugh-out-loud humor...you will like this one. Michael Keaton was so young in this film, but he could already carry a movie.

The saying "the more things change, the more they stay the same" applies in full to the third season of the Emmy-winning comedy Barney Miller, which underwent considerable shakeups in its cast and creative ranks in its third season while retaining its sharp writing and performances. Gone from the 12th Precinct at the beginning of Season 3 (1976-1977) are Gregory Sierra’s Chano and Linda Lavin’s Wentworth, and in their place Steve Landesburg as the phlegmatic Dietrich and Ron Carey as over-eager Carl Levitt in their first full season as cast members, and briefly, June Gable as Detective Maria Battista (Abe Vigoda’s Fish would join the ranks of the departed in the following season, and his spin-off series, Fish, was introduced here). Producer Chris Hayward had also left the show at the end of the previous season, and co-creator Danny Arnold would take his place for the remainder of Barney’s network run. But in spite of such turnover, the show lost none of its humor and edge during the third season, as witnessed by a pair of exemplary two-part episodes: "Quarantine" forces the detectives to do some soul-searching while under lockdown for a smallpox outbreak, while the season closer, "Strike," tests their loyalties when an unauthorized work shutdown is announced. The blend of laughs and drama present in both episodes are exactly why Barney earned solid ratings and critical respect during its tenure on TV, and while it remains one of the best-loved series to date. While the average movie watcher may not recognize the name Betsy Russell (Private School, Cheerleader Camp), those of us males who grew up in the 1980s, weaned on hours of dedicated cable viewing, know her as something akin to a goddess in the world of dumb, teen comedies for basically two reasons...she was one fine babe, and she didn't seem to mind showing some skinage, as evident in the film Tomboy (1985), among others. Originally released by Crown International Pictures, the film was directed by Herb Freed (Graduation Day, Survival Game) and stars, as I mentioned, Ms. Russell. Also appearing is Gerard Christopher ("Superboy"), Kristi Somers (Hardbodies), Richard Erdman (The Blue Gardenia), and the late Eric Douglas (The Flamingo Kid), youngest son of actor Kirk Douglas.

Russell plays Tomasina `Tommy' Boyd, a tomboy through and through who spends her days working on cars, shooting hoops with the boys, and riding her motorcycle. After a fairly schmaltzy and pointless opening sequence showing Tommy as a girl, playing baseball with the boys, scoring a run, and ultimately hugging her father (who was apparently an astronaut in the air force), all done in slow motion montage form, we're now in the present as Tommy rises from bed and proceeds to shower...some skin but no goodies...yet...man, you wouldn't think you could be jealous of a sponge...anyway, Tommy works as a mechanic at Chester's Garage, a dumpy filling station where she's often visited by her girly girl friend Seville (Somers), an aspiring Broadway dancer who seems to have little problem sleazing her way up the ladder of success, as evident later on in the film. After witnessing a dance audition by Seville and her troupe, one performed for some potential financial backers (surprisingly enough they declined on investing in Seville and her rotten routine), we're back in the garage as big time stock car driver/professional pretty boy Randy Starr (Christopher), who Tommy's got a serious crush on...seems Randy has been hired by a local rich and infinitely sleazy dink named Ernie Leeds, Jr. to race for him, and Randy offers Tommy an invitation to come to Leeds' house to check out his boss stock car. After this we see Seville auditioning for a donut commercial, whoring it up good, followed by Tommy and Seville heading to Leeds' house where Tommy and Randy race around on motocross bikes (at one point Tommy crashes in a swampy morass, resulting in her revealing her Tommy `guns, if only to get out of her wet clothes...hootchie mama!). Following this there's a party sequence at Leeds' house (with parachute pants as far as the eye can see), Tommy and Randy hook up, as evident with an overly long montage sequence featuring the pair engaging in all sorts of outdoor activities, but eventually they have a falling out as Tommy shows Randy up on the race track while an important sponsor is in attendance, the result being the pair deciding to race each other to settle once and for all who the best driver is...

While the Tomboy is pure 1980s teenage hokum through and through, it fairs better than its counterparts based solely on the presence of Betsy Russell and her generous `assets', along with her willingness to put them on display. The movie itself actually played like one, long series of Mentos commercials. One example of this is early on as Tommy is riding her motorcycle to work and she stops off to engage in a game of basketball with some local chumps. Through a bit of creative editing Russell makes all of her shots, but then here's the kicker...as she's leaving, she climbs aboard her motorcycle and one of the dudes tosses her the ball. She catches it with one hand, puts it up, and swoosh! It goes in...as she drives off the yahoos begin high fivin' each other, apparently overjoyed in the fact they've just been emasculated by losing to a girl in their own sport. I did learn a lot of things from this film, including the following...

1. I'd give my left gonasticle to be Betsy Russell's loofa.
2. Pretentious, forgettable pop songs from the 1980s, often featured in films like this, generally included meaningless lyrics like `You got the magic, I got the fire'.
3. Nothing gets women hotter than chasing them around town in your muscle car, throwing a constant barrage of catcalls in their direction.
4. When a sign warns of `severe tire damage', they ain't kidding.
5. Untalented bimbos could manage to find success given their willingness to whore it up.
6. Someone other than Jimmy `J.J.' Walker actually used the phrase `Dy-no-mite!' in the 1980s.
7. When doing a television commercial for donuts the performers actually get paid in donuts.
8. Goofy, slow motion montages are a great way to pad out a film.
9. When waiting for a woman to meet you for a date it's probably not a good idea to let her walk in on you while you're watching porn as she'll think you're some kind of skeevy perv.
10. Apparently, in the world of stock car racing, slapping a jet engine onto your vehicle isn't considered an illegal modification.

The performances were passable for a movie like this (although the idea of Betsy Russell as a tomboy seemed a bit farfetched), but the writing is pretty lousy (this one's about as predictable as they come). I seriously doubt anyone was sitting on the edge of their seat at the end of this one, wondering if plucky Tommy would beat arrogant Randy in the race, thus validating Tommy's belief a woman can do anything as well as a man. I do love these kinds of films, though, as they take on the superficial mask of female empowerment while passing along copious amounts of nekkid female flesh (Russell's character was the only female that came off remotely decent here). I did gag a little on some of the schmaltz-laden montages but overall, I'd say this was an entertaining, three star (out of five) feature, and an extra star thrown in for Ms. Russell.

The picture quality on this BCI DVD release, presented in widescreen (1.85:1), looks pretty decent, and the Dolby Digital stereo audio comes through well enough. There aren't any extras, except for a few trailers for some other BCI DVD releases in their Crown International Classics (I wouldn't necessarily refer to some many of them as `classics') series including Hunk (1987), The Beach Girls (1982), Jocks (1987), and My Chauffer (1986).

Okay, I still think the ORIGINAL CSI from Las Vegas is the BEST of all these CSI programs, but no one can deny David Caruso's depiction of "Horatio Caine" is unique in and by itself.

I first saw Caruso as the young deputy named "Mitch" in Sylvester Stallone's 1982 original "First Blood" theatrical film and thought "hey, this kid has some talent." When he later appeared on "Hill Street Blues" as an Irish Gang leader, he seemed to be earning his oats.

Then came the fiasco of his successful role as officer John Kelly on the mega popular TV crime series, "NYPD Blue." Golden Globe awards followed, and Caruso thought he was ready for the big time of feature films in Hollywood. He abruptly left that successfull series, and immediately tripped over his hugely inflated ego and fell flat on his face. It was an all too often repeated story seen quite regulary in the entertainment industry.

But as fate would have it, he had a second chance for fame and fortune befall him in 2002 when he became the lead role in this hit series, "C.S.I. - Miami." You can still see a bit of the smug, self-indulgent attitude come out in his role as Lt. Horatio Caine, the head of an elite Criminal Scene Investigation squad that steps into major crimes to pick apart the finite evidence and solve the mysteries behind the madnesses of the Miami-Dade Police Department.

It is a character we had seen before in Prime Time Television, most particulary remembered in William Shatner's depiction of Captain James T Kirk in the Star Trek series of the 60's, then later as "Admiral Kirk" in the Star Trek feature films. The slow affected speech patterns, the careful thoughtful pauses, and the dramatic looks all characterized a personality supremely confident in his job, but almost laughable in their "cartoon quality" of acting ego gone amuck.

Caruso tops this off with positioning himself into constant sideways stances, putting on his sunglasses at the dramatic entry line of the show, and his leaning into the camera and fellow actor during emotional lines that over empasize their dramatic impact; but make us all warm and fuzzy inside that this guy knows who he is, what he is doing, and is going to get the job done by the close of the show.

It is Campy acting at its best; quite predictable but also a joy to watch.

Emily Proctor is an excellent "second" in command, with her cute Southern twang, her droll sense of humor, and yet her undeniable belief in herself as a talented insightful investigator. Her beauty and intelligence is an unbeatable combination, and Proctor pulls it off with class and professionalism.

Rory Cochrane's "Speedle" is missed terribly now after his demise in the cast, and we tolerate Adam Rodriguez's role as "Eric Delko." as his overacting seems to be toned down a notch as the series has matured. The one laughable episode where Rodriguez suddenly knows how to fly a helicopter was rediculous in premise, but provided a laugh to the more skeptical viewer so we let it go and continued to watch with tongue in cheek, and a smirk on our collective faces.

All four of the C.S.I. series take the premise of their typical duties in a real police scenario over the top, as all too often they are involved in the actual apprehension and arrests of the felons on the streets. Standing right next to the SWAT teams with guns in hand is totally a fabrication of overactive Hollywood writers to infuse more "Action" into what truly is a behind the scenes job with microscopes and computers.

But this is Hollywood TV, and we've come to expect exaggeration for the sake of entertainment.

So give "C.S.I. - Miami" FIVE STARS for helping you forget that many murders still go unsolved, and that you actually might be safe on your vacation trip to Miami Beach next year. I would still look over your shoulder from time to time.......and stay away from dark alleys.

If you want to see Tool's 4 music videos from Undertow and AEnima, plus the Hush video from their Opiate EP - which is not nearly as cool as the others - then look no further.

Those who have seen a Tool video pretty much know the consistent level of weirdness that they should expect. Those who haven't should proceed immediately in a direction that will allow them to see one. Their blend of insanity is vaguely reminiscent of The Twilight Zone, Aphex Twin videos (Come To Daddy!), and Japanese horror films.

As Salival is no longer made and is in high demand, the price point is fairly steep. I have no idea why this DVD would be discontinued other than to hype Tool, or some other marketing or image thing; but the prices that people pay for it on eBay are indicative of the exceptional artwork contained within the Salival DVD.

The live CD included is good too, but it doesn't affect me like the videos - and I'm not some sort of MTV hooligan, either. (Actually, I'm not even a TV hooligan, but that's beside the point.)

Anyone who has been to a Tool show will see much of their live abilities coming through in this CD. Anyone who hasn't will quickly come to understand and even love Live Tool, the Other Dark Tool.

Their live "Third Eye" is possibly even more amazing than the studio version, and "Message To Harry Manback II" is an entertaining intermission. Zep fans will appreciate Tool's cover of "No Quarter." When metal bands (or nu-metal, or alt rock, or whatever you call Tool) cover classic rock songs, it usually seems to work.

If you can afford it, and you really dig Tool, then this product comes highly recommended. If you don't, buy the VHS version, or download some videos (legally), or watch a friend's.

This dispensable 1984 comedy is a mostly humorless parody of '30s gangster movies, the kind of thing that might work reasonably well in a five-minute sketch on Saturday Night Live but which nearly beats a viewer to death over the course of a feature. Michael Keaton and Joe Piscopo play rival Mafia bosses, but once the novelty of that is introduced, it's already old. There's plenty of sustained effort from the rest of the cast (Marilu Henner, Danny DeVito, Maureen Stapleton), with Griffin Dunne getting special points. Amy Heckerling (Fast Times at Ridgemont High) directs as if this were indeed on television. --Tom Keogh

This movie is so dumb, yet so amusing. It's a fun little movie with silly gag after silly gag. Maureen Stapleton as Ma Kelly is a riot. "Bless the saints, it's an ashtray! I've been thinking of taking up smoking. This clinches it!"

If you like silly-laugh-out-loud humor...you will like this one. Michael Keaton was so young in this film, but he could already carry a movie.

Tool - a repressed musical talent

With roots in Los Angeles, California, the rock band Tool was planted firmly founded in 1990. While describing a rather active and commercially embraced his career, the first group presented with a heavy metal sound of what some people have called a slam-bang approach and characterized. At that time the group, because it was heavy metal with a kind of thrash metal sound was connected. After the release of their second album in 1996, was recognized as being a precursor for the alternativeMetal movement.

Basic Information

Tool band composed of four members who have a number of progressive rock, art rock, alternative metal product, and the selection of music progressive metal. In the course of their careers under way, are the following brands of the group: Zoo Entertainment Volcano II Tool and Dissectional represented.

The band is also demonstrated for the release of long or complicated songs with texts at issue in the abstract, as well asmusic videos unconventional, which led to the censure of their creativity. Instrument on the date received praise from critics and sold throughout the world performance. When a new album produced the top of the charts of their efforts and adopted in many countries.

Current Members

Danny Carey of Tool is currently set (drums, percussion), Justin Chancellor (bass), Maynard James Keenan (vocals) and Adam Jones (guitar). So far, the group included PaulD'Amour on bass, but in 1995 he decided to leave the band to explore more experimental projects. After his discharge instrument, he formed a band known psychedelic pop, and then ventured into other projects of this page.

Brief Career History

During the early days was the instrument, future members of the group all moved to Los Angeles since 1980. With different occupations in the head, like art and cinema, has taken on a variety of jobs before the meeting through mutual friends neighbors. FirstKeenan and Jones met with a friend and began to Jam Sessions until the late '80s to save it.

Keenan Carey lived up to the time and has been with the band after the execution of a mutual friend. Carey has begun to shake hands, if not, the duo was invited to know the other musicians for jam sessions. Bassist D'Amour was then initiated, and the band was now complete. Three months later, Tool landed a record deal with Zoo Entertainment andsoon found themselves touring with bands like Fishbone and Rage Against the Machine.

Compared with the immediate area was when the first commercial version of "opiates" (1992) on the air. A year later, his first full-length album was titled "Undertow," a reality in 1993. Soon he earned a spot on the Lollapalooza tour, and other notable performances followed. In 1994 a single entitled "Prison Sex" negative criticism generated, as the music is like a videoGraphic and offensive to viewers. The issue of pedophilia and the public reaction eventually caused MTV to ban the video after a few shows.

In 1995, D'Amour left the band after their second album entered the registration process. Two months later, replacing Justin Chancellor, who once was part of an English band called Peach, him. Instrument was familiar with his music, because they were on tour with the band in Europe. Over the years, the group sat down to censorship and faceDifficulty of getting airplay. A short hook in the administration also delays their next album. Over time, the group was able to overcome many obstacles and still express themselves through their music.

Since its birth, the tool has produced four studio albums: "Undertow" (1993, 2x platinum), "Aenima" (1996, 3x platinum), "Lateralus" (2001, 2 x platinum) and "10,000 Days" (2006 ;) platinum. With the release of their last twoAlbum, the group has enjoyed a turnover of More than 550,000 each within the first week. Also, took the number one position in the U.S. music charts. Some of the individuals who have an impact on the Top 10 and Top 20 music charts in both mainstream and modern rock clubs around the world as "Sober" (1993), "Stinkfist" (1996); "schism" (2001), "Parabola" (2001), "Vicarious" (2006) and "Jambi" (2007).
